What to Expect
Swelling is your body's natural healing response to surgery. Here's the typical pattern:
- Day 1: Mild to moderate swelling begins a few hours after surgery as anesthesia wears off.
- Days 2-3: Swelling reaches its peak. This is normal even though it may look concerning. The extent depends on the number of implants placed and whether extractions or bone grafting were involved.
- Days 4-5: Swelling begins to noticeably decrease.
- Days 5-7: Swelling is significantly reduced. Most of the visible swelling is gone.
- Days 7-14: Any remaining minor swelling resolves completely.
Full-arch procedures (All-on-4) typically produce more swelling than single implant cases because more surgical work is involved. This is expected and does not indicate a problem.
Managing Swelling Effectively
- Ice packs β Apply ice or cold packs to the outside of your face for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off during the first 48 hours. This is the single most effective swelling reducer.
- Head elevation β Sleep with your head elevated 30-45 degrees (extra pillows or a recliner) for the first 2-3 nights. Gravity helps reduce fluid accumulation in the surgical area.
- Anti-inflammatory medication β Ibuprofen (Advil) is both a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory. Take as directed to help control swelling. Your Fusion surgeon may prescribe a short course of steroids for full-arch cases.
- Hydration β Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated supports your body's healing processes.
- Avoid heat β Do not apply warm compresses during the first 48 hours (heat increases blood flow and swelling). After day 3, moist heat can help if swelling persists.
- Rest β Physical activity increases blood flow and can worsen swelling. Rest as much as possible during the first 48-72 hours.
When to Contact Your Surgeon
While swelling is normal, certain signs may indicate a complication that needs attention:
- Swelling that increases after day 5 β Swelling should be decreasing by days 4-5. If it's getting worse, contact Fusion.
- Fever above 101Β°F β A mild temperature elevation is normal, but a sustained fever may indicate infection.
- Pus or discharge β Any pus from the surgical site should be evaluated.
- Swelling with increasing pain β If pain and swelling are both escalating after the first 3 days, contact your surgeon.
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing β Rarely, severe swelling can affect the airway. This is an emergency β contact us immediately or go to the nearest ER.
