How Much Pain to Expect
The honest truth is that dental implant surgery is less painful than most people fear. Here's a realistic picture:
During Surgery
Zero pain. Local anesthesia completely numbs the area. If you opt for IV sedation, you won't be aware of the procedure at all. The most you'll feel is some pressure during implant placement.
Day 1 (After Anesthesia Wears Off)
Moderate discomfort as anesthesia fades (3-5 hours after surgery). Take pain medication before numbness fully wears off. Most patients describe it as a deep ache, similar to after a tooth extraction but often milder.
Days 2-3
Peak discomfort period, but still manageable for most patients. Over-the-counter ibuprofen (400-600mg every 6 hours) effectively controls pain for the majority of patients. Prescription medication is available if needed.
Days 4-7
Pain decreases significantly. Most patients need only occasional over-the-counter medication. By day 7, many patients report zero pain.
After Week 1
Pain should be minimal to none. Any persistent or worsening pain after 7-10 days should be reported to your Fusion surgical team.
Pain Medication Options
- Ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) β First-line recommendation for most patients. Controls both pain and inflammation. 400-600mg every 6-8 hours as needed.
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol) β Can be alternated with ibuprofen for stronger pain control. 500-1000mg every 6 hours.
- Combination therapy β Alternating ibuprofen and acetaminophen every 3 hours provides excellent pain control without prescription medication for most patients.
- Prescription medication β For patients who need stronger relief, prescription pain medication is available. Your surgeon prescribes this based on the extent of your procedure.
Studies consistently show that ibuprofen combined with acetaminophen is as effective as many prescription pain medications for dental surgical pain, with fewer side effects.
Factors That Affect Pain Level
- Procedure extent β Single implants cause less discomfort than full-arch cases (more surgical sites).
- Extractions β If teeth were extracted during the same appointment, expect more soreness.
- Bone grafting β Bone graft procedures add additional discomfort and swelling.
- Individual pain tolerance β Everyone experiences pain differently. Some patients barely need medication; others need a few days of more aggressive pain management.
- Smoking β Smokers tend to experience more pain and slower healing. Another reason to quit before implant surgery.
