Stage 1: Hemostasis (Hours 0-24)
Immediately after implant placement, your body begins the healing cascade:
- Blood fills the space around the implant, forming a protective clot
- The clot acts as a scaffold for cells that will build new tissue and bone
- This is why you should avoid straws, spitting, and rinsing vigorously on day 1 β disturbing the clot can impair healing
Stage 2: Inflammation (Days 1-7)
The inflammatory phase is actually a critical part of healing:
- White blood cells flood the surgical area, cleaning up debris and fighting potential infection
- This causes the swelling, redness, and warmth you experience during the first week
- While uncomfortable, inflammation is a sign that your body is actively healing
- Anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen) moderate this response without stopping it
Stage 3: Proliferation (Weeks 1-6)
New tissue begins forming around the implant:
- Gum tissue regenerates over the surgical site
- New blood vessels form to supply the healing area (angiogenesis)
- Early bone-forming cells (osteoblasts) begin depositing new bone matrix around the implant surface
- The implant surface's micro-texture helps bone cells attach and grow along it
Stage 4: Bone Remodeling (Weeks 6-16)
Immature bone gradually transforms into mature, dense bone:
- Woven bone (initially deposited, relatively weak) is replaced by lamellar bone (organized, strong)
- The bone around the implant becomes progressively denser and stronger
- The implant becomes increasingly stable as bone-to-implant contact increases
- This is the primary reason why the healing period takes several months
Stage 5: Osseointegration (Months 3-6)
The final stage is complete osseointegration β the implant is now a permanent part of your jaw:
- Mature bone has fully grown around and locked onto the implant's titanium surface
- The implant is as stable as a natural tooth root (or more so)
- It can now support the forces of chewing, speaking, and normal function
- Your Fusion surgeon confirms integration through clinical testing and imaging before placing your permanent restoration
Once osseointegration is complete, your permanent monolithic zirconia prosthesis is fabricated in our in-house lab and attached. The implant will continue to function for decades β potentially a lifetime.
