Signs of Implant Infection
Watch for these symptoms that may indicate infection:
Early Infection (During Healing Period)
- Increasing pain after the first week (pain should be decreasing, not increasing)
- Swelling that worsens after day 4-5
- Pus or foul-tasting discharge from the surgical site
- Fever above 101Β°F (38.3Β°C)
- Persistent bad taste in your mouth
Late Infection (Peri-Implantitis)
- Bleeding when brushing around the implant
- Red, swollen gum tissue around the implant
- Pus or discharge at the implant site
- Looseness or mobility of the implant
- Receding gums exposing the implant post
- Pain when biting or chewing
If you experience any of these symptoms, contact Fusion Dental Implants promptly. Early treatment is the key to saving the implant.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the severity of infection:
Mild Infection
Antibiotics (oral or topical) combined with professional cleaning of the area. This resolves most early infections without surgery.
Moderate Infection
Surgical debridement (cleaning infected tissue from around the implant) combined with antibiotics and antimicrobial rinses. The implant is preserved in most cases.
Severe Infection or Significant Bone Loss
If bone loss is advanced, regenerative procedures (bone grafting around the implant) may be attempted. In some cases, the implant must be removed, the infection treated, and a new implant placed after healing.
Preventing Implant Infection
- Daily oral hygiene β Brush twice daily and use floss or a water flosser around implants. Plaque buildup is the primary cause of peri-implantitis.
- Regular dental visits β Professional cleanings every 6 months allow early detection of any issues.
- Don't smoke β Smoking impairs immune response and blood flow, increasing infection risk.
- Follow post-op instructions β Take prescribed antibiotics, maintain oral hygiene, and attend follow-up appointments.
- Choose experienced providers β Sterile surgical technique and proper implant placement reduce initial infection risk. Fusion's board-certified surgeons follow hospital-grade protocols.
