What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
Not every dental issue requires immediate same-day care, but many do. Here is how to know.
Requires Immediate Care (Same Day)
- Severe toothache, especially with swelling, fever, or a bad taste (signs of abscess or infection)
- Knocked-out tooth. Time is critical; re-implantation is most successful within 30 to 60 minutes
- Cracked or fractured tooth, particularly if the crack is deep, causing sharp pain, or exposing the inner tooth
- Dental abscess, a pus-filled infection that can spread to the jaw, neck, and beyond if untreated
- Significant facial swelling, which may indicate spreading infection and can become a medical emergency
- Broken dental restoration exposing a nerve, causing sharp, intense sensitivity that prevents eating or sleeping
- Soft tissue injury, such as lacerations to the gums, lips, or tongue that will not stop bleeding
Can Wait 24 to 48 Hours (Urgent, But Not Emergency)
- Lost filling (no pain)
- Broken crown (tooth not exposed or painful)
- Mild toothache without swelling or fever
- Lost temporary crown
Can Be Scheduled at Next Availability
- Chipped tooth with no pain
- General tooth sensitivity
- Cosmetic concerns
If you are unsure whether your situation is an emergency, call us. We will help you determine the right level of care.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Knocked-Out Tooth
Act immediately. Time is your most important factor.
- Handle the tooth by the crown (white part) only. Never touch the root.
- If dirty, rinse gently with water (do not scrub).
- If possible, place the tooth back in the socket and hold it there gently.
- If re-insertion is not possible, store the tooth in milk or hold it between your cheek and gum.
- Call us immediately: (916) 292-9998.
- Get to our office within 30 to 60 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.
Severe Toothache
Rinse with warm saltwater. Take over-the-counter pain medication (ibuprofen is generally most effective for dental pain). Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum. Apply a cold pack to the outside of the face for swelling. Call us for a same-day appointment.
Cracked or Broken Tooth
Rinse with warm water. If bleeding, apply gentle pressure with gauze. Avoid chewing on that side. Call us immediately. The sooner we see a crack, the more options we have to save the tooth.
Lost Crown
If you have the crown, try to temporarily re-seat it using dental cement from a pharmacy (available over the counter). Avoid chewing on that side. Call us to schedule a repair appointment.
Dental Abscess (Swelling, Fever, Bad Taste)
This is a serious condition that requires prompt professional care. Do not ignore an abscess. Left untreated, dental infections can spread to the jaw, neck, and airway, becoming life-threatening. If you have severe facial swelling, difficulty breathing, or difficulty swallowing, go to an emergency room immediately. For localized abscess symptoms, call us for same-day care.

Preventing Dental Emergencies
Many dental emergencies are preventable with regular care:
- Regular checkups catch decay, cracks, and gum disease before they become emergencies.
- Mouthguard use during contact sports prevents knocked-out and cracked teeth.
- Night guards for grinders prevent tooth fractures and implant damage from bruxism.
- Prompt treatment of small problems prevents them from becoming big emergencies.
At Fusion Dental Implants, our general dentistry services include comprehensive preventive care designed to keep dental emergencies from happening in the first place.
