When Bone Grafting Is Needed
Bone grafting may be recommended when:
- The jawbone is too narrow (less than 5-6mm width) to accommodate an implant
- The jawbone is too short (insufficient height above the nerve or below the sinus)
- Teeth have been missing for extended periods and bone has resorbed
- Previous gum disease caused significant bone destruction
- A tooth was extracted and the socket walls collapsed
Your Fusion surgeon determines the need based on 3D CT imaging, which provides exact measurements of bone dimensions in all three planes.
Types of Bone Grafts
Socket Preservation Graft
Placed immediately after tooth extraction to prevent the socket from collapsing. This is the simplest graft and heals in 3-4 months.
Ridge Augmentation
Builds up the width or height of the jawbone ridge. Uses particulate bone graft material packed into the deficient area and covered with a membrane. Heals in 4-6 months.
Sinus Lift
Specific to the upper jaw. The sinus membrane is gently elevated and bone graft material is placed beneath it, creating room for upper jaw implants. Heals in 4-9 months.
Block Graft
For significant deficiencies, a solid block of bone (usually from your chin or hip) is secured to the jaw with screws. Less common today due to advances in other techniques. Heals in 4-9 months.
Alternatives to Bone Grafting
Modern techniques can sometimes avoid bone grafting entirely:
- All-on-4 technique β Angled implants maximize existing bone. Our most common graft-free solution for full-arch cases.
- Zygomatic implants β Anchor into the cheekbone for severe upper jaw bone loss.
- Short implants β Work in less bone height than traditional designs.
- Tilted implants β Strategic angulation to engage available bone.
Our surgeons always consider graft-free alternatives first. Bone grafting is recommended only when it's the best path to a long-term successful outcome.
